Z/OS + hercules configuration file

A key element to run Z/OS on Hercules is the hercules configuration file.

This file informs, amongst other things, the location of DASD files.

To illustrate this, assume that the DASD files are in /hercules/cckd.

We will then inform the hercules.cnf file in the following way:

# DASD Devices

0A81 3390 cckd/zares1.cckd sf=shadow/zares1_*

0A9A 3390 cckd/sares1.cckd sf=shadow/sares1_*

    For some reason, it is still not clear.

    • ve2cuy says:

      Ok, let’s say that your hercules install folder is c:\programs\hercules\

      You have to copy all the files from your ADCD.Z110 download to c:\programs\hercules\cckd\

      Then replace the content of the file c:\programs\hercules\hercules.cnf with the exemple of my blog.

      Start hercules, connect 3 wc3270 session then IPL…

      Voila!

  2. Bartek says:

    I have an issue while trying to make z/os work on hercules. Your instructions are great and easy to follow, but I can’t logon to ispf. While the user and pw seems to work, I get following errors:

    IKJ56457I LOGON FAILED JCL ERROR IN LOGON PROCEDURE
    and in the other terminal:
    IEFC452I IBMUSER – JOB NOT RUN – JCL ERROR

    Is there a way to change the logon procedure without having access to the TSO/E(I suppose there isn’t), I will be very thankful for any advice and/or help.

    How can i make a fully Hercules.CNF able to install??

    Need and waiting your answer!!

    Greetings

    • Visinth says:

      So this is a reply that most likely won’t help the original poster in any way, but seeing how this is still the most relevant guide on how to run z/OS using hercules, and the mentioned version of z/OS is actually floating around somewhere, here’s how you make it work.

      Important! Do not install hercules to Program Files as is the default, use some other folder that windows won’t be pissy about. If you don’t hercules won’t load the images.

      The above version of z/OS comes with a config file that does need just a small tweak. There is a duplicate image that might cause you trouble, did to me, delete one of them.

      0AB3 3390 $(DASD)/SYS/USR004.CCKD
      0AB4 3390 $(DASD)/SYS/USR004.CCKD something. Change it to ISPFPROC.

      • Visinth says:

        Sorry for posting another one, but the comment got cut for some reason :/

        Ignore the something for now. Rename the config file to Hercules.cnf and replace with it the config inside hercules folder. Copy the whole OS folder here as well, like is the cckd folder in the video guide and change properties of this folder to not be read-only.

        Now Hercules should be able to mount the images.

        If you have changed your port for the terminal to 3270, change it back to the default 23, otherwise you’ll get the message that the device refused you.

        If you get an error while loging in, try changing the logon procedure. When typing in the password, there is a procedure something, just under it, change that to ISPFPROC.

      Press esc key after typing hercules and pressing enter, this will show the CPU has stopped while on this screen notice the very first DASD device. Notice that mine is « M 0A80 3390 DASD Z110/DASD/IBM/JARES1.CC ». Start a terminal with a 3270 connection next for your console screen and at this point all you should see is a Hercules Screen. Next I would select the CMD prompt where you typed hercules to initiate Hercules press the letter L for « IPL » then the letter that coincides to the « FIRST » DASD device for me that would be the letter M and then press Enter/Return key and this should initiate the Initial Program Load and MVS should kick off. After a moment of loading you should see that TSO has loaded and logons are enabled at which point Hercules splash will change to z/OS screen.

    I am hoping you can offer any advice on this…..

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,I have installed z/os on my PC according to your instruction and it’s working fine. I am new to CICS.How can I logon to CICS region??

  15. Amardip Kumar says:

    Thank you so much. Your instructions are really very simple. I am able to login to TSO but I am not able to login to CICS and IMS. Can you please guide me how can I login to TSO region??

  16. Jck says:

    Do I need license to run this ZOS on Hercules. Or its free like Hercules. Since its just a Z/OS Emulation Files right?

    • Manuel says:

      z/OS is copyrighted by IBM and to run it on Hercules and you need a license.
      MVS (an old OS release) remains freely usable until v.3.8 according to the license IBM used in those years.

  17. Lucifer says:

    Similar issue as the others with the

    IKJ56457I LOGON FAILED JCL ERROR IN LOGON PROCEDURE
    and in the other terminal:
    IEFC452I IBMUSER – JOB NOT RUN – JCL ERROR

  18. John says:

    I’m also getting LOGON FAILED JCL ERROR IN LOGON PROCEDURE. Doesn’t anyone know what to do about it?

    @Jck: No, it’s the real z/OS thing. Hercules is an emulator for the zSeries, but there is no emulator for the OS, so you run the real OS on the zSeries emulator.

    Check the display field Logon Procedure ===>

    You may request specific help information by entering a ‘?’ in any entry field

    Having had the same issue I have managed to login now with the problematic accounts by simply changing

    Procedure ===> ISPFPRO1

    which was showing as default in the TSO/E login to

    Procedure ===> IKJACCNT or ISPFLITE (see bellow)

    Account: IBMUSER

    Procedure ===> ISPFPRO1

    which was showing as default in the TSO/E login to

    Procedure ===> IKJACCNT

    That allowed me to login with the IBMUSER default password

    I also tried the

    Procedure ===> ISPFPRO1

    which was showing as default in the TSO/E login to

    Procedure ===> ISPFLITE

    and that worked as well

    Hey Guys:

    Z/OS will not started ? Change « MAINSIZE 1024 » to a lower value in you Hercules config file and try again.

    TSO will not to be displayed ? Type « r 01, retry » in the first terminal.

    Shutdown you Mainframe correctly.
    Type « S SHÚTSYS » and « Z EOD » and wait a wile.

    • Manuel says:

      These kind of error is usually due to a folder not present in your setup.
      In the CNF file at row 30 it defines a synonym for DASD

      « DASD » means « Z110/DASD »

      then a few rows below you’ll find all the disk specification in the form

      0A80 3390 $(DASD)/IBM/JARES1.CCKD (the $ tells name substitution)

      so substituting the alias this means that Hercules will be looking for a file named:

      /Z110/DASD/IBM/JARES1.CCKD

      You can fix the CNF file or change your directories structure.

    hi
    in may case when i use « ibmuser » as username + « sys1 » as password i was stopped at the poste log on message screen :

    the z/os wan’t give me control to press enter and acces the ispf firt main menue
    even after changing the « procedure===>ISPFPROC1 » to « procedure===>ISPFLITE » or
    « procedure===>DBSPROC » or « procedure===>IKJACCNT »

    what solved my problem is
    1) logging with « adcdmst » as username
    2) changing the password to « sys2 » you can choose any password you want( to change the password type it in « NEW PASSWORD====> » in the logging menue.
    3) enter then enter this time the post log message will leave the place for the ISPF main menue

    hope it’ll help
